Dr. Jim Field's research topic is the anaerobic bioconversion of inorganic and organic pollutants. Current topics include: anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX); anaerobic biotransformation and bioremediation of arsenic; biodegradation and biotransformation of novel munitions compounds; reductive precipitation for the bioremediation of uranium; recovery of nutrients and energy from lipid extracted algea (byproduct of algal biodiesel production); permeable reactive bio-barriers (PRBs) for removing sulfate and heavy metals from acid rock drainage; recovery of metals, rare earth elements and platinum group metals from waste and wastewater. In addition to anaerobic bioconversion, he also studies the toxicity of engineered nanoparticles and evaluating the fate of nanoparticles in wastewater treatments systems.

Dr. Field's research interests include biological treatment of contaminants in drinking water and wastewater treatment.
